LiDAR, as tool, is performed by highly accurate sensors. Hundreds of thousands of lasers are sent then received every second. By calculating the geometry of each xyz point, an accurate and precise point cloud can be generated. In addition, our LiDAR sensor is also RTK enabled which helps drive it’s precision. By connecting to the local network the sensor can deliver highly accurate data to any known or local coordinate system.
The device manufacturer claims that the sensor is accurate to within 100mm on the x and y coordinates and 50mm on the z when flown at 50m high. However, when accompanied by ground control, tests have shown that the data can be further aligned to even more precision.
LiDAR reaches places where photogrammetry can’t. Unlike photogrammetry, LiDAR needs only see a single point once to document it’s location. With option of upto 3 returns, each beam omitted is capable of detecting 3 surfaces. It’s because of this that LiDAR can penetrate canopies up to 90% in density.
LiDAR’s primary output is a point cloud. After verifying and cleaning the data, a user can produce even more detailed outputs including rasterised grids, contour lines and 3d meshes. With the data easily exportable to CAD, we can even provide same day turnarounds from data capture to the deliverables.
