6 Years of Flight: From “Pretty Pictures” to Precision Science at Drone Scotland!

Bjorn Aaen and Michele Aaen, Drone Scotland – Lanarkshire Business Awards 2020

This week marks my 6th work anniversary with Drone Scotland, and what an exhilarating journey it’s been, helping transform a small micro business into a thriving family business.

When I joined, our toolkit was simple: a workhorse DJI Phantom 4 and a focus on general drone images, construction videos, and panoramas. We were mostly delivering great visuals.

Fast forward five years, and everything has changed.

The drone industry has exploded, and we’ve evolved right along with it. We’ve moved beyond the “one size fits all” drone to a sophisticated fleet of aerial and ground tech equipped with specialised sensors: LiDAR, Photogrammetry, Cine, Thermal, and Multispectral. In 2024, we conducted a 94km shoreline survey. We’ve captured detailed condition surveys of factories, industrial units, tenement homes, and historical structures. We’ve produced measurable data for the housebuilding sector from the land acquisition through to adoption surveys.

The days of just delivering “pretty pictures” are over.

Today, the majority of our work is about measurable, scientific data. We use our equipment to create outputs that are often accurate to OSGB, transforming structures and landscapes into:

  • Accurate Point Clouds
  • Interactive 3D Models and Topography
  • Detailed Orthomosaics
  • Certified Thermal and Multispectral Reports

We’re not just flying; we’re delivering critical, measurable data that drives key decisions for our clients.

I’m incredibly excited for the next five years. I predict a future dominated by smarter drones, automation, and ever more effective software. I’m here for the long haul to help shape that future.

A huge thank you to our amazing clients and the Drone Scotland family for making this journey so rewarding!
